Chapter 9: Fruits
Anyone who has ever had the opportunity to taste fruit that has not been grown in a small garden knows how radically different it tastes from the produce in the big grocery chain stores. In most of the rural areas, there are produce farms where families can pick their own fruit and vegetables for a small fee. This handpicked fruit tastes the way it used to years ago, before mass production methods became the norm. In comparison, how many times have you purchased expensive apples, pears, or peaches in a grocery store only to bring them home and discover they are mealy and tasteless?
To circumvent this problem, you can turn to local farm stands where the quality of the produce for sale can be somewhat, but not necessarily, better. Unless the farm stand owners are growing their own crops or working in cooperation with other farmers, the merchandise in their stands could still be from the same large distributors that sell fruit to your grocery store. Even if you do find a higher standard of fruit and vegetables at local farm stands, the prices can actually be higher, as the smaller businesses must struggle to compete with the larger grocery outlets.
The fact that you have been paying too much money for fruit that you could grow better yourself should give pause for thought. You always have a choice. You can continue buying subpar produce and complain about it, or you can take a leap of faith and begin to raise your own fruit and berries in your own garden. Saving the seeds from your own fruit plants, planting them, and harvesting the fruit from the plants they produce is the ultimate goal in self-sustaining gardens.
